A game character became real.
I was in the middle of a quest when I heard the knock on my door.
I didn’t want to answer it, but the knocking continued, and I knew it wouldn’t stop until I did.
I paused my game and went to see who it was.
When I opened the door, I found my two best friends standing there.
Max Bennett and Sarah Lin were both smiling at me, and I couldn’t help but smile back.
“Hey,” Max said.
“Hey,” Sarah echoed.
“What’s up?”
I asked them.
“Not much,” Max said.
“We were just hanging out and thought we’d come see how you’re doing.”
“That’s right,” Sarah said.
“We haven’t seen you in a while.”
“I’ve been busy with work,” I told them.
“But I’m glad you came by.”
“Can we come in?”
Max asked me.
“Of course,” I said, stepping aside so they could enter my apartment.
I sat on the couch, and they sat down on either side of me.
“So, what have you guys been up to?”
I asked them.
“Not much,” Max said.
“I’ve been playing ‘Chronicles of Deloria’ a lot.”
“Of course you have,” I said with a laugh.
“It’s my favorite game,” he said.
“I’m excited for the new expansion pack that’s coming out soon.”
“When is it coming out?”
I asked him.
“In a couple of months,” he told me.
“I can’t wait that long!”
I laughed at him.
“That’s too bad."
“I know,” he said.
“But it will be worth the wait.” He was silent for a moment, his gaze drifting to the television screen.
“Hey, did I tell you guys I found a new friend in the game?”
“You didn’t,” Sarah said.
“Tell us about her.”
“What’s her name?”
“What class is she?”
I asked him.
“Alice Hart,” he told me.
“She’s a sorceress.”
“Is she any good?”
Sarah asked him.
“She’s really good,” he told her.
“We’ve been doing quests together and she never lets me down.”
Sarah raised an eyebrow at that comment.
“What do you mean by that?”
“She’s always there for me,” he said.
“I can count on her to help me when I need it.”
Sarah smiled at him, and my heart fluttered as I watched them.
It was nice to see them being so open and affectionate with each other, especially since they’d only been dating for a few months and were still in the honeymoon phase of their relationship.
I wished Max and I were that way, but we’d been dating for so long that we were used to taking each other for granted.
He was also deeply engrossed in his game, and it was hard for him to break away from it long enough to give me the attention I deserved.
He was an only child who lived with his parents, and he had a lot of free time on his hands, which he spent playing ‘Chronicles of Deloria.’
I was grateful for that, since it was how we’d met, but I couldn’t help but wish he’d make more time for me.
I watched as he talked to Sarah, admiring his tall, lanky frame, and his green eyes set behind thick-framed glasses.
He had short blonde hair and was clean-shaven, and he always dressed in the latest fashions.
He’d even gotten a haircut since the last time I’d seen him, and I liked the way it looked.
I missed the days when we used to be more affectionate, and I wanted to rekindle those feelings.
I wondered if there was anything I could do to make him pay more attention to me.
Maybe I could start playing ‘Chronicles of Deloria’ myself and join him in the game.
I wasn’t sure if I’d like it, but it might be fun to give it a try.
I looked at Max and Sarah, who were still talking about the game, and I wondered if they would mind if I joined them.
