I was in the middle of a science experiment when I realized I was in Leo Nguyen’s body.
I’d been paired with him for our final project, and we were supposed to be testing the effects of different substances on plant growth.
But then he’d accidentally knocked over a beaker of some weird-smelling liquid, and the next thing I knew, we were both lying on the floor, staring up at the ceiling.
I blinked a few times, trying to clear my vision.
"What just happened?"
Leo asked.
"I think we passed out," I said.
"Are you okay?"
He sat up and rubbed his head.
"Yeah."
I pushed myself into a sitting position and looked around the room.
The other students were still working on their experiments, but no one seemed to have noticed that anything was wrong.
"Did you see what happened to us?"
Leo shook his head.
Chapter 1
"Me too."
I held out my hand to help him up.
He took it, and we both tried to stand at the same time.
I looked down at my hands and gasped.
They were so small!
And they weren’t my hands at all—they were Leo’s hands!
"What’s going on?" he asked in a voice that sounded nothing like mine.
"Jamie?"
I looked up at him, then back down at my hands again.
They were definitely smaller than I remembered, with short, stubby fingers and pale skin that was covered in freckles.
And the voice that had just come out of my mouth—it wasn’t mine at all; it was Leo’s voice, deep and gravelly and completely foreign to me.
I looked around the room in disbelief, recognizing the classroom but feeling utterly out of place in this unfamiliar body.
Leo seemed just as shocked as I was; he stood up and walked over to a nearby mirror, staring at his reflection with wide eyes.
"Jamie," he said again, his voice trembling with fear.
"I’m you!"
"I know," I said weakly.
"And you’re me."
"I don’t understand," he said, turning away from the mirror to face me again.
"How is this possible?"
I shook my head slowly, trying to make sense of it all myself.
d of people having out-of-body experiences before, but I’d never actually believed in them.
And even if they were real, I was pretty sure this wasn’t one of them.
For one thing, I could still feel my body; I could feel the weight of it beneath me as I sat on the floor, and the way my heart was pounding in my chest.
For another thing, this felt way too real to be a dream.
I mean, I’d had some pretty weird dreams before, but nothing like this.
And it wasn’t like we could have switched bodies somehow; we weren’t even touching when we passed out!
Leo was right; there was no way any of this made sense.
"It has to be a dream," he said after a moment.
"I mean, what other explanation is there?"
I nodded slowly, trying to convince myself that he was right.
But deep down, I knew he wasn’t.
We weren’t dreaming—this was really happening!
And if it was really happening, then that meant…
Oh god!
I’m inside Leo Nguyen’s body!
