I switched bodies with my arch-rival.
I woke up in Mia Torres’s body the day of the big play rehearsal.
It was like a bad dream, except I wasn’t dreaming.
I was living it.
I was living Mia’s life.
And Mia was living mine.
I didn’t know how it happened or why, but I had to figure out a way to get back into my own body before it was too late.
My phone buzzed on the nightstand, and I reached over to grab it, knocking over a glass of water in the process.
"Shit," I muttered.
I wiped at the spill with my hand and then answered the call without checking who it was.
"Hello?"
"Jamie?"
Mia’s voice came through the line.
"Is that you?"
"Yeah," I said, my heart pounding in my chest.
"What’s going on? Why do you sound like that?"
"I don’t know," she said. "But I think we switched bodies."
"What?"
I asked, my voice rising an octave.
"How is that even possible?"
"I don’t know," she said again.
"But I’m in your body right now."
I looked down at myself and saw that she was right.
I was in Mia's body.
"Okay, okay," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "We need to meet. Where are you?"
"I'm at your house," Mia replied. "But we can't just skip school. We need to act normal until we figure this out."
"Act normal?" I echoed, feeling the panic rise. "How am I supposed to act normal when I'm not even me?"
"Just... try," she said. "I'll do the same."
I hung up and took a deep breath, looking around Mia's room. Everything was so... organized. Trophies lined the shelves, and her soccer uniform was neatly folded on a chair. I stumbled out of bed and tripped over a pair of running shoes.
"Great start," I muttered to myself.
I dressed quickly, fumbling with the unfamiliar clothes, and headed downstairs. Mia’s mom greeted me with a smile.
"Morning, honey! Ready for the big rehearsal today?"
"Uh, yeah," I said, trying to sound confident.

I grabbed a piece of toast and bolted out the door, jogging down the street towards school. Mia's athletic body moved differently than mine; every step felt like an awkward dance.
When I arrived at school, I realized I had no idea where Mia's locker was. I scanned the hallway frantically until I spotted it—number 217. I tried a few combinations before finally getting it right on the third attempt.
The bell rang just as I slammed the locker shut. My heart pounded as I navigated through the crowded hallway. Then I saw him—Alex, my best friend since kindergarten.
"Hey, Mia!" he called out, waving.
"Hey," I replied, trying to sound casual.
He walked over and gave me a high-five. "Ready for rehearsal? You’ve got that big scene today."
"Yeah, totally ready," I lied.
As we walked to class, Alex chatted about his weekend plans, but my mind was elsewhere. How could I pretend to be Mia when I barely knew anything about her life?
In drama class, everyone was buzzing with excitement about the upcoming play. The director clapped her hands to get our attention.
"Alright, everyone! Let's run through Act Two!"

I found my place on stage and glanced at the script in my hand. Mia had highlighted all her lines in pink. As we started rehearsing, I stumbled through my first few lines but gradually found a rhythm.
Then it hit me—Mia had a crucial role in this play. If I messed up, it could ruin everything for her.
The pressure mounted as we moved through the scene. Suddenly, I heard a hushed conversation behind me.
"Did you hear about what happened yesterday?" one student whispered.
"Yeah," another replied. "They say it might have something to do with that weird incident in the science lab."
My ears perked up. Could this be related to our body swap?
I edged closer to listen more carefully when the director's voice cut through the air.
"Mia! You're up!"
I froze for a moment before stepping into the spotlight. The lights blinded me as I tried to remember my lines.
"Mia?" the director prompted again.
I opened my mouth to speak when suddenly—
The fire alarm blared throughout the building.
