Rebirth on the night before the exam
I was going to fail my final exam.
And if I failed, I wouldn’t graduate with my class.
I’d be stuck in this small town for the rest of my life, working at the same dead-end job I’d been working at since I turned sixteen.
I didn’t have a choice.
If I didn’t pass this test, my life was over before it even began.
I ran a hand through my hair and tried to focus on the material in front of me, but it was no use.
My brain was fried from studying for the past two weeks straight, and nothing was sticking.
I’d never been good at school, but this was different.

I was desperate.
The textbooks and notes scattered around my desk seemed to mock me with their complexity.
My eyes were bloodshot from lack of sleep, and every time I tried to read a sentence, the words swam on the page.
Panic gripped me as I realized I wasn’t retaining any information.

I slammed my fist on the desk in frustration, sending a few pens rolling onto the floor.
“Damn it!” I yelled, my voice echoing in the empty room.
My phone buzzed, breaking the silence.

It was Mia calling.
I hesitated for a moment before answering.
“Hey,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
“Jamie, how’s it going?” Mia’s voice was soft and full of concern.
“Terrible,” I admitted. “I can’t remember anything. I’m going to fail.”
“You’re not going to fail,” she insisted. “You’ve been working so hard.”
“It doesn’t matter how hard I work if nothing sticks,” I said bitterly.
There was a pause on the other end of the line.
“Take a break,” Mia suggested gently. “You need to clear your head.”
I sighed. “Maybe you’re right.”
“I know I’m right,” she said with a small laugh. “Go get a snack or something.”
“Okay,” I agreed reluctantly. “Thanks, Mia.”
“Anytime,” she replied. “You’ve got this, Jamie.”
I hung up and pushed myself away from the desk, my chair scraping loudly against the wooden floor.
The kitchen was dark and quiet as I made my way to the fridge.
I opened the door and stared blankly at the contents inside, my mind still racing with thoughts of failure.
Then I noticed the clock on the wall—it was almost midnight.
How had it gotten so late?
Suddenly, everything went black.
When I opened my eyes again, I was back at my desk.
The textbooks and notes were exactly where they had been before, but something felt different.
I glanced at the clock on my desk—it was the night before the exam again.
“What the hell?” I muttered to myself, rubbing my eyes in disbelief.
Had I fallen asleep and dreamed everything?
No, this felt too real.
Confusion turned into determination as I realized what this meant—I had another chance.
I wasn’t going to waste it.
I grabbed my notes and started reading with renewed focus, determined to make every second count.
