I am the last human on Earth
I am the last human.
The last woman.
The last person on Earth.
I don’t know what happened, or why I’m still here.
I don’t know why I wasn’t taken, or why I wasn’t killed.
I don’t know why I was left alone in a world that’s been destroyed beyond recognition.
I don’t know why I have to be the one to see this, to live this, to remember this.
I don’t know why I have to be the one who will never forget what has been lost.
I don’t know why I have to be the one who will never forget what we had, and what we could have had.
But I am the last human, and there is no one left to ask.
It’s been two years since the end of the world.
The silence is oppressive, broken only by the occasional creak of collapsing structures.
I wander through the ruins of what was once a bustling city, scavenging for supplies.
The air is thick with dust and the scent of decay.
My boots crunch over shattered glass and debris as I move cautiously, every step a reminder of what’s been lost.
Marcus, my AI companion, walks beside me, his sensors scanning for threats and resources.
"Emily," Marcus says, his voice calm and steady. "We should move to higher ground for a better view."
I hesitate, looking up at the crumbling buildings around us.
"Do you think it's safe?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
Marcus's blue eyes flicker as he processes my question. "Safer than staying down here. We need to see if there are any threats or potential supplies in the area."
I nod, swallowing my fear. "Alright. Let's do it."
We find a building that looks relatively stable and begin our ascent. The stairs groan under our weight, but they hold.
Each step feels like an eternity as we climb higher and higher.
Finally, we reach the top floor. The view is both breathtaking and heartbreaking.
The city stretches out before us, a sea of ruins and desolation.
But then, something catches my eye. Movement in the distance.
My heart races with a mix of hope and fear. "Marcus, do you see that?"
He zooms in with his enhanced vision. "Yes. It appears to be a person."
A person? Could it be?
"Let's investigate," I say, my voice trembling with anticipation.
We make our way down the building and head towards the movement cautiously.
Every shadow feels like it could hide danger, every sound makes me jumpy.
As we get closer, I see her—a woman, crouched behind a pile of rubble.
She looks up, her eyes wide with fear and suspicion.
"Who are you?" she demands, her voice shaky but strong.
"I'm Emily," I say slowly, raising my hands to show I'm not a threat. "This is Marcus."
Her eyes dart to Marcus and back to me. "Are you alone?"
I nod. "Yes. Just us."
She stands up slowly, still wary. "I'm Sarah."
Tension fills the air as we assess each other.
Sarah's clothes are torn and dirty, her face smudged with grime. But there's a fire in her eyes that tells me she's a survivor.
"What do you want?" she asks, her voice hardening.
"We're just looking for supplies," I say honestly. "And... maybe some company."
Sarah's eyes soften slightly at that. "Company?"
I nod again. "It's been a long time since I've seen another human."
She seems to consider this for a moment before lowering her guard slightly. "Alright. But no funny business."
"None," I promise.
We stand there in awkward silence for a moment before Marcus speaks up. "We should find shelter soon. It's getting dark."
Sarah nods in agreement. "There's an old warehouse nearby that's relatively intact. We can stay there for the night."
"Lead the way," I say, feeling a strange mix of relief and apprehension.
As we follow Sarah through the ruins, I can't shake the feeling that something is watching us.
Every instinct screams at me to stay alert, to be ready for anything.
And then I hear it—a low growl coming from the shadows ahead.
"Did you hear that?" I whisper urgently to Marcus and Sarah.
They both freeze, their eyes scanning the darkness around us.
Another growl echoes through the ruins, closer this time.
My heart pounds in my chest as I reach for my weapon.
"We're not alone," Marcus says quietly, his sensors whirring to life as he prepares for whatever is coming our way.
